legislative advocacy Educating Policymakers on the Need for Affordable Housing for Minnesota’s Low- and Moderate-Income Families
Program Goal: Increase federal, state and local public resources for affordable housing and obtain policy changes that protect the rights of homebuyers, homeowners and renters.
Greater Minnesota Housing Fund is involved in advocating for specific housing policies and programs at the Minnesota Legislature. Greater Minnesota Housing Fund typically join forces to collaborate on state policy with a strong team of housing organizations including the metro-based Family Housing Fund, Minnesota Housing Partnership, Housing Preservation Project, Homeline, North Country Development Fund and Minnesota Housing. As a result, housing partners can speak knowledgeably to both rural and urban housing issues affecting Minnesota.
A study by the national firm, BBC Research & Consulting, quantified a shortfall of 33,000 units of affordable housing in Minnesota by 2010, assuming historic levels of investment from federal, state and philanthropic funds. However, the study did not account for:
As a result, the need is far greater than anticipated as these factors profoundly affect Minnesota’s affordable housing demand. Greater Minnesota Housing Fund works with community leaders statewide to advance public policies that support the creation and preservation of affordable housing throughout Minnesota by educating legislators and civic leaders about the value of affordable housing for healthy families and vital communities.
GMHF also sponsors legal advocacy to combat discrimination, violation of fair housing law and uninformed acts of NIMBY-ism (not-in-my-back-yard) that threaten to prevent the development of affordable housing.
