“You come back and think you can pick up where you left. You can’t. You try. Your friends are different. You lost three years of your life.”

After returning home, Fred says, “I wouldn’t talk to anyone. I’d still be under that bridge, but someone said to come up here (to a shelter). All I want is a place to sleep without 30 other people. This is a photo a Time-Life photographer took of me in Nam. He sent this 8x10 to my mother. There was no support back then. They are trying to help me now - that’s what counts.”
