Serena, age 2 ½, lives in a shelter with her 29-year-old mother, Lynn, and three brothers. They lost their housing when Lynn had to admit her oldest son to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis after he began suffering from epilepsy. When they came back to Hibbing, Lynn's roommate had lost the house they were renting. Lynn works as a dishwasher.
